Self Assessment Tax Return

Self assessment tax return is a system which HMRC uses to collect income tax and capital gains from individuals. In other words, you tell HMRC how much your taxable income and gains for the tax year by completing self assessment tax return

Do I need to submit a self assessment tax return?

You must submit a self assessment tax return if HMRC has requested to do by sending you a notice to file the tax return. If you believe you are not required to file the return, you must get the notice cancelled with HMRC.

The most common scenarios where you may be required to file a tax return are:
  • You are self-employed and have income over gross turnover over £1,000
  • You are a partner in a business
  • You are a company director and receiving income on which you need to pay tax e.g. dividends
  • You are renting a property
  • You have a tax charge payable on your child’s benefit
  • Your income is above £100,000

HMRC has provided a tool which may help you to check if you are required to submit a self assessment tax return

Important dates and deadlines

The period for which you are required to submit a self assessment tax return is called Tax Year in the UK, and it starts on 6 April and ends on the following 5 April.

For example, the tax year 2023/24 starts on 6 April 2023 and ends on 5 April 2024. Few other examples are below:

2021/226 April 2021 to 5 April 2022
2020/216 April 2020 to 5 April 2021

The deadline to submit a self assessment tax return for a tax year is 31 January following the end of the tax year. For example, the tax year 2020/21 ends on 5 April 2021 and the following 31 January after the end of the tax year is 31 January 2022. Therefore the deadline to submit a tax return for the tax year 2020/21 is 31 January 2022. Please find below few examples for your understanding:
